Well even though my job no longer requires me to travel and I am not on site anymore, the company I had went to work for has decoded to close the office I worked from. This has caused me to work from home in a virtual office now. So whats that mean you say? Means I work from home again, though I still have a schedule to keep and the customers I deal with are to think I still work in a controlled office. The hardest parts are interaction with the rest of the team.
We have tried many solutions and all have issues. Google Talk works for one to one chat, but group chat keeps failing. Mumble seems to work for voice chat but gets picky about audio settings. IRC is an option for group and works with many programs like Trillian and Pidgin, but to many of the younger crowd don't want to use it because it is old technology.
I guess they don't drive or ride bikes because those are based on older technologies. Actually they do drive, they just are stubborn about things and not wanting to do things for the greater good of the team.
In all the hardest thing is team support when you have members scattered around the country and everyone has their own way of doing something. Everyone needs to be one the same page using the same tools even if they are older technologies, after all that means less bugs to work out.
Other issues are access to CRM / CMS tools securely whether at my home office or if I am sitting at an airport. What if my internet access goes down, what if the company I work for, their internet fails? These are just some of the issues that should be planned for and solved before they happen.
Just some thoughts..

On The Go Connectivity - Part 2
Well in a previous posting I wrote about hotspots in salem. Here is an update to that post.
Borders has gone Free WiFi and even allows power access in the Cafe.
Safeway, yes I said safeway, the Wifi is not run by borders after all and is open and free. The manager also said if I can access the power plugs I can use them.
Downtown there are several small coffee shops.
The Blue Pepper. Open WiFi and CyberCafe. So if you don't have your laptop don't fret you can still get online, though that is not free.
I will over the next week survey other shops and provide an update.

Staying Connected On The Go
I face this issue myself all the time, I am not at my home office, not at my family or friends with WiFi, and I need online. Lets face it not all WiFi spots are equal. This review will detail only some of the ones in and around my home town of Salem Oregon. Not all spots are laptop friendly in Salem
Define Laptop Friendly:
The Ability to access Power Source and Possible WiFi. Shari's Restaurant: Free WiFi but has policies that expressly forbid accessing power outlets. Staff was very rude in informing me of that. Denny's Restaurant: No WiFi Available, Staff was willing to look for a booth with power until manager informed us that due to an incident that involved someone crashing the register system that it was now district wide not allowed. (Hey they were nice though) Schroeder's Guest House: No Outlets Available, No WiFi but if you have an Aircard or a Tethered Phone, Very good Service (Including the Staff) Starbuck's: As you guessed, they have WiFi, by AT&T and Qwest, but you have to pay by the hour. They do have outlets at most seats or close by. (I use my Tethered Berry, I already pay for Data, Why Pay More)
Safeways:
Not exactly somethiong you would expect but they do offer WiFi near the Deli and Starbuck's, Unlike the regulare Starbuck's the WiFi is free. Though like mny restraunts, i did not see power access for those with low batteries or Battery Issues.
So this now leads to the question, wo does offer WiFi in Salem Oregon, in Portland to our north it is easy, there are few spots now that don't offer WiFi.
One of my Favorite places in Portland Area is Panera Bread Company. It is a nice Deli, good food, and Free WiFi, and each booth has a power outlet.
Now all of this asside there are always the options of 3G, 4G, and other Wireless Devices and Services. But that will be for another article.'

Introduction To Mobile Office Success
Welcome to my Mobile Office review. In this I will be review tools and other items for the executive or representative on the go. I myself have operated a mobile computer repair shop for more than 7 years. I do not have a brick and mortar location as I build my company around us coming to the customer. This has given me a chance to review and learn many things needed to operate successfully on the go. I am now passing this on to you.
I will review cell phones, providers, and plans. I will review mobile internet access, devices, and even hot spots and free WiFi. I will review hardware and software.
So on with the writting.
